rGBH
Recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), also known as recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST), was developed and is manufactured by the Monsanto Corporation. rBGH is a genetically engineered hormone that forces cows to artificially increase milk production by 10 to 15 percent. A 1991 report by Rural Vermont, a nonprofit farm advocacy group, revealed serious health problems with the rBGH-injected cows that were part of a Monsanto-financed study at the University of Vermont. The FDA currently assures consumers that rBGH is safe for cows and humans; however, this claim remains controversial and therefore, Three Rivers Market does not carry dairy products that contain rBGH.
