The 2012 Board Retreat at The Highlander Center

Greetings! Welcome to the Three Rivers Market Board of Directors blog. That’s a mouthful, isn’t it? Let’s just call it Board News.

This blog represents an opportunity for the Board to communicate with the Three Rivers Market community. And what a community it is! The beautiful new store has been open for just over a year, sales have been great, and we have a bunch of new members.

So what’s the Board been up to? Well, we’re searching for the Next Big Thing.

As you may or may not know, the Board is not involved in the day-to-day operations of the store. We practice something called Policy Governance. That means that the Board delegates store management to the General Manager, and we focus on big-picture items like compliance with policies and the future of the co-op.

For many years, that future was A Shiny New Store. Now that we have that — thanks to our community and to the tremendous effort of our General Manager and her staff — we’re looking for the Next Big Thing.

If you attended TRM’s last annual meeting, in the fall of 2011, you know that we spent part of the meeting hearing from the community about what that should be.

Some of you wanted new ways to communicate with others in the TRM community. Others wanted us to look at new ways of getting healthy food to more people, whether through satellite stores, a buying club, or a CSA. We’re thinking through those ideas, and others, as we work on finding the Next Big Thing.

We’re also celebrating the International Year of Cooperatives. We’ve been learning about all sorts of different cooperatives. The Stories.coop site is a great place to start to learn more about co-ops today.
